First he shows up at the movie theater his daughter and her date are at, something that many people with overbearing parents can connect to. However, after that first seemingly normal attempt at keeping an eye on his daughter, he shows up behind a way of toys at a carnival. And even more surprising still is when he shows up in a helicopter (a helicopter with shark teeth painted on it nevertheless) when the date moves to a typical “make-out spot”. Another subtle surprise is the music choice with Another One Bites the Dust, playing in the background throughout the commercial. Hyundai does not just list horsepower, or special feature of their car, they highlight one of those features using a story that most parents can relate to. This move is just made more effective by the humor and playfulness going into it, taking a situation most dad’s dread to think of, and turning into something they can laugh with. Thinking from the point of view of a father, I can see how this commercial is very effective. Of course Hyundai does not expect dads to start following their daughters on dates like Kevin Hart in the commercial, but by showing him crash three typical date spots, it shows fathers that they can know what their daughters are doing at all time. This is even further reasserted by the slogan “A dads gotta do what a dads gotta do”, right before Kevin Hart asks his daughter what she did that night and turns to smile to the camera. Not only does the slogan reaffirm every dad’s protectiveness of their daughter, is also leads into Kevin Hart acknowledging the camera, tying the story together by sharing a moment directly with the viewer to make them feel even more
