It’s important to have HR policies and practices because that is what makes a business run. People make a business run, and HR policies are what help keep the people happy. It keeps the staff motivated to do well, and content with where they work. Having HR policies also increases efficiency, and rolls with the punches of demand while still benefiting the company. If the company didn’t have human resource policies, the company would be winging it, and not be efficient. Employees would not be happy, and would most likely come to work going through the motions. Human resources sets the tone of the culture, the organization, and works with change so the company can remain strong through it. If a company did not have human resources, a few managers would have a lot more work cut out for them.

Before reading the chapter, I read the Netflix HR policy. The policy that first bothered me was “Hire, Reward and Tolerate Only Fully Formed Adults”. This bothered me due to the wording. I’m a student, and I at first took offense to this statement because I took it meaning they wouldn’t give students a chance and only wanted matured adults with extreme experience. This time, what bothered me was the reward of giving so much vacation time. I felt this did not make sense with efficiency. Employees can take as much vacation time as they please. It mentioned accountants were just expected to be present during certain times of the year. I feel that is too lenient. While it is beneficial for employees, I feel it’s counter-productive. Too much vacation time can make people come back and care-less about their job because they got very comfortable with being relaxed.
