Long Term Care Facilities Long term care is for an individual who requires assistance with physical or emotional needs over an extended period of time (Day, n.d.). The individual would need support with activities daily for healthy living. The individual would require this type of help due to illnesses, diseases or age preventing the individual from doing daily activities (Day, n.d.). “Estimates by experts are that at least 60% of all individuals will need extended help in one or more of the areas above during their lifetime (Day, n.d.) .” The reasons for long term care are all different for each individual, various types of long term care exists for each reason. Some activities include simple but important tasks like buying groceries or making doctor’s appointments (Heatlh Promotion by Design in Long-Term Care Settings, n.d.). Another example of simple activities is getting ready for the day and eating breakfast, these are more crucial for daily health (Heatlh Promotion by Design in Long-Term Care Settings, n.d.). Some individuals do not have the same strength or memory to do these activities every day. A caregiver is committed to help obtain the help needed to do tasks that are crucial for maintaining quality of life (Heatlh Promotion by Design in Long-Term Care Settings, n.d.) The residents’ quality of life is a very important purpose for all long term care settings (Heatlh Promotion by Design in Long-Term Care Settings, n.d.). One example of how the quality of life is exercised is improving sleep (Heatlh Promotion by Design in Long-Term Care Settings, n.d.). The comfortability is an important aspect of quality of life (Heatlh Promotion by Design in Long-Term Care Settings, n.d.). For example, insomnia or disturbed sleep is common in older individuals and making sure the environment is comfortable is a big contribution to improving sleep.
