The baby boomer generation earned their name due to the great incline of children being born and the increased fertility rate of the 1950's time period. This generations identity was built around the expectation of having a family, buying a house and getting a good job. Where as today's generation relies heavily on technologies and luxuries such as Internet and social media for their careers. The younger generation currently alive in 2017 can be described as carefree, self expressive and open minded. These qualities are what shape the identity of today's modern westernised society as well as the concepts of globalisation and Socialisation. These concepts co-relate to shaping the identity of current generations as they are now exposed to new business ideas and social media platforms online and through technology which also which plays a big role in shaping their identity as they are exposed to it on a daily basis. This can be supported by the responses in the survey conducted which asked people doing the survey "how has media and technology influenced your identity through out your life?" In which a 18-24 year old woman born in Generation Y answered "The media and technology, I believe, has become a greater vehicle for education but also for our …show more content…
Currently in 2017 western society has grown accustomed to not having gender roles and living care free lives. This is conveyed through the survey question that states "How has gender influenced your identity throughout your life?" Whereby a white caucasian female under 18 years old answered "Gender has helped me realise that no matter what gender you can attach whatever you want and don't let anyone stop you". Currently in 2017 the way in which society views gender and sexuality is more relaxed than the baby boomers generation. In doing this society allows for people to express themselves and shape their own identity without the pressure of social norms and expectations on what they 'should' be focused on. Although a difference is highlighted throughout both generations, time periods as through the concept of Socialisation it is seen that today's westernised society has less motivation to buy a house and start a family. Part of this reason can also be because of the process of globalisation through time making the cost of living and houses a lot more expensive than they were in the baby boomers
