What are some leadership qualities that you value? The Endurance expedition of 1914-1917 was a trying feat. As captain of the Endurance, Sir Ernest Shackleton “put his own life on the line, against incredible odds.” and showed true leadership qualities that were put to the test throughout the expedition. He was adaptable, courageous and optimistic. These qualities Shackleton showed during the entire Endurance expedition. He was able to adapt to the conditions on the pack ice and on Elephant island in addition to South Georgia all the while ensuring the safety of his men. Courageously shackleton showed no fear of the Antarctic during the three years of the expedition and his courageousness really showed on South Georgia when they were faced …show more content…
The crew and whalers of south Georgia might say otherwise. Courage was needed. “By endurance we conquer” quoted Sir Ernest Shackleton even before the expedition had begun and through this quote the Endurance (the expedition's ship) was named. “Shackleton led a crew of five aboard the James Caird through Drake’s passage and miraculously reached South Georgia” . Shackleton also showed large amounts of courage because he led his men to safety and managed to get a rescue boat for the others on elephant island. Struggling on South Georgia all the while not having a map of the interior (not mapped yet). When he and two of his men were faced with almost impossibly huge challenges, one of these being on the final stretch to the whaling station when they were crossing the island. Shackleton, Worsley and Crean were to slide down the side of a mountain descending two or three thousand feet in two or three minutes. Courageously Shackleton, who always strived for the south, showed huge amounts of leadership during this expedition in his feats on south Georgia, elephant island and the long winters on the pack
