Napoleon always that he was a superior being that gifts from the man above. Bell points out in an exact instance that Napoleon “did I believe myself to be a superior man, and did the ambition come to me of executing the great things which so far had been occupying my thoughts only as a fantastic dream.” In his own words he thought he was a superior being over everyone besides God. One thing that Napoleon received from his men was that of Loyalty. In one instance he says, “The fatherland has the right to expect great things out of you…All of you wish to be able to say with pride, upon returning to your villages”. As Bell continues to state that Napoleon shared his worth with his men on the basis that he knew what kind of men that he had and that most of them came from very poor provinces. His main goal with the New France was to make a republic out of it, not a monarchy. His new Republic that was called the “First Consul” was “not like Kings…who see their states as an inheritance.” As you see here is that he doesn’t want to be considered to be a king, but continually pasted so called “Constitutions” which more and more gave him power, especially the “Constitution of 1802” which gave him office for life. While also giving him the power to elect his successor which ultimately would eventually be someone from his bloodline. One of the main instances from the book that really made me double look at the way Napoleon believed his was a king was his coronation at the “Temple of Reason”, in which he wore a glamorous robe as well as his wife Josephine.
