People all over the world study and learn in educational settings throughout their lives. However, many people are not learning at their highest levels of capability, and for the most part, it is because many students and people do not know how to learn efficiently. Many students have poor and unhealthy habits for studying, but if they knew how to be more efficient with their study time, they could learn more effectively. Studies worldwide are beginning to spring up about the connection from exercise to learning, cognition, and brain activity, but does exercise help you learn? It can be said that working out makes someone feel “alive,” “renewed,” or even causing a “head high.” Dr. John Ratey says, “[T]he real reason we feel so good when we get our blood pumping is that it makes the brain function at its best, and in my view, this benefit of physical activity is far more important—and fascinating—than what it does for the body.” All of these characteristics are traits of what serotonin can cause in a person's mood and emotional levels. Furthermore, dopamine is also released. It is a hormone that affects learning and attention. When activated in the brain it could be the factor that determines what is filtered into short-term and long-term memory. Finally, norepinephine, a stress hormone that acts like a power dose, causes glucose to be released throughout the body, the heart rate to rise, and increases in blood flow. All hormones are important, but these are specific to aid in learning. “Participation in physical activity has been associated with the reduction of a number of physical (for example, cardiovascular disease, colon and breast cancer, and obesity) and mental (for example depression and anxiety) disorders across the adult lifespan.” However, regardless of the facts and known physical benefits of physical activity; the average adult does not follow the recommended amount of daily exercise, even with it being only thirty minutes.
