America’s education lacks compared to other countries. Koebler states that the main issue in the Unites States’ underachievement lies in the education system the country has. By finding out how other countries that rank higher in education, the United States can improve. The National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) believes that key to improvement is by letting students learn more about subjects they have interests in, like other countries do. Instead of being taught to perfect core, cognitive skills, such as reading and writing, children are being brainwashed. They are getting false senses of self-esteem in replacement of actually learning. He looks into issues associated to each education level, from kindergarten to college. Then, he talks about five sections in which school systems react to criticisms about not changing. Factors, like money, play key roles in misleading the education system and the students involved in it. This book was published in 1993, but I believe the information in the book can still be applied to in today’s time. Sowell not only talks about the need to change the education system, but also how students are affected by it. I like this source for his research in how easily children are mislead in school settings and are not learning as effectively as they should be. This, of course, ties in with my topic of how school systems impact students’ identities. I can use this source in talking about how the education system has strayed away from its original purpose and the impact it has on
