Writers often explore hard topics for society to understand, these texts use poetic language to explain ideas in the text. This is apparent in all four texts I have chosen. Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane, the poems Schizophrenic by PK Page, Ringing the Bells by Anne Sexton and the short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Stetson. All of these pieces help the reader understand mental suffering through creating empathy. Each text shows the reader how to understand how people suffering from mental illness feel through easier comparisons to grasp.

All four texts I have studied are examples of good literature as they help society understand mental suffering. When we look at someone suffering from mental illness we automatically assume they are incapable of daily routines such as caring for themselves and work. However, in these texts, the writer creates empathy towards the characters. The writers attempt to make us feel this way as is allows us to connect with people suffering from mental illness in a personal way. This lets it affect us as if they were close to us. Allowing the reader to be more sympathetic and patient towards people suffering from mental illness. All of these pieces are successful at helping the reader understand mental suffering because we begin understand how we would feel if we were trapped in our own minds, with no one there for support.
