The purpose of sociology is to discover and demonstrate how social forces shape our lives (Sociological Imagination, n.d.). One social force discussed in the ppt. video that I hadn’t really thought shaped me as a person were the different social movements. I am a female and before the Civil Rights Act in 1960 I would not have been able to vote when I turn eighteen. Science and Technology is one of the ten social institutions (Social Forces, n.d.). An institution is an established pattern of social relationships that exists to meet the needs of a society (Social Forces, n.d.). Because Science and Technology is always changing, we as a society and as an individual must change with it. I am now able to use advanced computer systems to create and research material for school, I am able to take online college classes, and I can connect with people from all over the world thanks to the social media and other websites. An endless amount of jobs has also been created in the scientific field. We have built robots and other machines that have made life easier and more enjoyable. However children now can use cellphones and IPads at the young age of four. We are social creatures and we influence and are influenced by the social world (Social Forces, n.d.). Family is one of the ten social institutions and they affect my core values, beliefs, social class and norms of life (Social Forces, n.d.). I live in a very nice house with a complete family who encourage me to be what I want and support me in my life decisions. My family has given me so many opportunities that many families can’t afford to give their children and I feel very privileged. We live in a beautiful neighborhood in a small town and I attend the public school with my siblings. Since I was born my family has decided where I would live, where I would go to school, the people I would be around, how well my manners will be, and what possible job opportunities would be available for me during high school. Even though I don’t live in a large city where one has more opportunities, I have my family values and beliefs that make me who I am
