Mice And Men Crooks

“You go on get outta my room. I ain’t wanted in the bunkhouse, and you ain’t wanted in my room.” “Why ain’t you wanted?” Lennie asked. “‘Cause I’m black…” (Steinbeck 68). The book Of Mice and Men is set in the 1930’s on a ranch after the stock market crash. This book was published in 1936. The author, John Steinbeck, also wrote many other amazing novels. This book is about two friends, Lennie and George, who travel around together finding places on farms to work. In the novel Of Mice and Men there are many characters with impairments, some of these people include Candy, Crooks, George, and Lennie.

Crooks is black and he has a crooked back. Crooks’ handicap can been seen when Curley’s wife states, “ This is just a nigger talkin’ an’ a busted back nigger. So it don’t mean nothing, see?” (Steinbeck 71). In this quote Carlson is talking about Crooks and how nothing he says matters because he is black showing one of Crooks’ impairments on the farm. Another quote where you can see Crooks’ impairments on the farm is through the quote, “She turned to him in scorn. ‘Listen nigger,’ she said. ‘You know what I can do to you if you open your trap?’ Crooks stared hopelessly at her and then he sat down on his bunk and drew into himself.” (Steinbeck 80). In this quote Curley’s wife is yelling at crooks and is proving to him that because he is black he could get in more trouble than anyone else could on the farm if he were to open his mouth proving one of his physical impairments. A final instance when Crooks’ deteriorations can be seen is when Lennie comes into his room without permission. Crooks does not ever go into their room because he is black and they do not want him and Crooks does not want them to come into his room.
