Title & Subject Matter: Look, See, Create: Sculpture Garden
This project titled “Look, See, Create: Sculpture Garden” consists of an activity book with various activities that young visitors can complete while visiting the sculpture garden at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. This project was completed in conjunction with the museum’s current program of activity books that highlight the permanent collection. Branding standards are consistent with the museum’s current look (bocamuseum.org). The activity books will be placed in a basket at the entrance of the sculpture garden with clipboards, pencils, and other writing instruments for guests to use. The activity book provides a variety of activities that complement the sculpture garden’s collection

This area is popular with young audiences because they enjoy the interactivity of some of the sculptures. For example, Tony Rosenthal’s cube spins. The large sculpture amazes visitors of all ages. Object-based learning in museums is effective because some concepts are hard to picture. Seeing the objects up close brings evidence to a learning experience. Since the sculptures are larger than life, children can walk all around the objects and get up close. This will add to the museum’s various opportunities for free-choice learning (Falk 2000, 25). The majority of the activities include opportunity for social interactions and discussions that enhance the learning experiences by using the principles of the social cognitive theory (Schunk 2012, 159). Young visitors can choose to complete one or all activities in the book. They can even take the book home, at the end of the visit. The children may be attending a school visit or visiting with their family. Much research provides evidence on the benefit of children visiting museums (DeWitt 2008, 181). Museum visits provide children with a look into the past, and provides them with opportunities to have conversations about objects (Gross 2014). Museums also foster creativity, growth, and development (Gross 2014). With over twenty outdoor sculptures in this area, there is a variety of activities that can bring students towards higher level thinking while engaging them with fun activities. The goal of the program is to get young visitors to look at the sculptures and think critically while completing a variety of activities that encourage creativity utilizing writing, math, and artistic skills.
