William Shakespeare’s Macbeth focuses on the life of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, who long for overwhelming amounts of power. Macbeth receives a prophecy saying that one day he will become King, however his impatience causes him to act upon it. Him and his wife make the conscious decision to kill the current King, but the consequence that follows is their inability to perceive their thoughts rationally. By making their first priority to obtain power, they not only ruin their lives, but also the lives of those around them. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth’s conscious decision to kill King Duncan becomes the root cause of their self-destruction.

After King Duncan’s murder, she tricks herself into thinking that what she did was right and pretends to not be affected by it. Lady Macbeth portrays such dynamic characteristics that she can be seen as headstrong or as vulnerable in the strangest of times. However, just like every other human being, she has a breaking point. For instance, when she admits to the murder of the King, “Yet who/ would have thought the old man to have so much blood in him” (5.1.36-37). This scene takes place in the middle of the night, when Lady Macbeth comes out of her room while sleepwalking and says all the things she is afraid to say when she is conscious. She admits to the murder of not only Duncan, but also of Macduff’s wife and Banquo. She keeps talking about her hands and how they are full of blood, and asks herself if they will ever be clean, demonstrating her feeling of guilt towards all of the deaths she is responsible for, and her wanting to be innocent again. She bends and bends until she breaks, and admits to being ashamed only when unconscious, proving that she is stubborn until her very end.
