However, in “Watchmen”, almost hope is lost, and the people can feel it. Between a man killing his two kids so they won’t have to see how the world will corrupt them and gang members easily killing an elderly man in his home, they all are feeling the effects of hopelessness and they don’t know what to do about it. The difference between the civilians and the superheroes is that the civilians are just now realizing how their hope is lost while the superheroes have known all along. They’ve known for years how the world would go downhill as no one was there to save them all, but they still all agreed to retire and let other people take care of the problem. The loss of hope is everywhere in the book and becomes a central theme that the reader would rather not think about because we love believing in the idea that there is always another way and that these people are just crazy and won’t make the right decision.
