We read in Luke 23:26 that Jesus could not carry his own cross and they conscripted a certain Simon of Cyrene who was passing by to carry the cross to Golgotha. And when they arrived at the hill of crucifixion, the soldiers crucified him along with two thieves. And Pilate had a plaque written in Greek, Hebrew, and Latin and placed on the cross, which read, “Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews.” The Jews argued that it should rather say that Jesus had claimed to be the King of the Jews, but Pilate answered that what he had written, he would not change. Meanwhile, the soldiers divided Jesus’ clothes between them, and cast lots for the seamless cloak so they would not need to rend it; this was to fulfill the prophecy in Psalm 22:18. And there were certain women standing and watching, including Jesus’ mother Mary. And when Jesus saw his mother and the disciple John standing near, he entrusted his mother to John, asking him to care of her like his own mother. Therefore, when Jesus knew that everything was accomplished, he said that he was thirsty, in fulfillment of prophecy, likely referring to Psalm 69:21. And so, when they had wet his lips with vinegar, Jesus bowed his head, said “It is finished,” and died. And the Jews, attempting to insure that the bodies would not hang on the crosses over the Passover, asked the authorities that the men’s legs would be broken to speed their death. And so the soldiers broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus, but when they realized Jesus was already dead, they did not break his legs. And one of the soldiers, to ensure Jesus’ death, pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water came out. This was to fulfill the prophecies in Psalm 34:20 and Zechariah 12:10. And these things were recorded by eyewitnesses, and can be trusted.
