HIPPA (The Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) is a culmination off laws that protect an individual’s health care information, it also protects who can have access to their records. As with any laws there are issues with HIPPA. HIPPA has its importance in nursing care. Consumer brochures also play a significant role in HIPPA. “Privacy and confidentiality are basic rights in our society. Safeguarding those rights, with respect to an individual’s personal health information, is our ethical and legal obligation as health care providers. Doing so in today’s health care environment is increasingly challenging” (Erickson, 2005).

Theses brochures are extremely informative and help alleviate many questions that a patient may have. Written on the brochure titled “Protecting Your Privacy & Security, Your Health Information Privacy,” is numerous questions and answers that many patients many have regarding HIPPA. For example; “What information is protected by HIPPA Privacy Rule, Who Has to follow the HIPPA Privacy Rule regarding the use and sharing of my health information, What are some of the ways that my health care information may be used and shared, Can I control who sees my health information, Do I have the ability to control how information related to behavioral health treatment is used and shared, and What do I need to understand about the HIPPA Notice I get from my doctor and health insurance company.” (2016). Many patients get upset and angry when they are trying to get health information about family or friends and are denied this information. Having consumer brochures will help alleviate some of this stress on patients and their families. Consumer brochures will also help explain what HIPPA is and what is does. Also, will help patients set up who can see their records so families and other providers will not have a difficult time retrieving these report. I choose to interview my husband, Chris, my sister in law, Erin and my younger brother, Mark. The first question that I asked all three interviewees was; What does HIPPA (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) mean to you? Here are the responses I received; “It’s a legal protection for patients that keeps medical records private” (Chris Quade) “patient’s information privacy” (Erin Galvin), “I have no idea what HIPPA is,” (Mark Galvin). The second question asked was as follows; How do you feel about the privacy of your own personal health care records? The three answers I got were; “I feel they are private and protected” (Chris Quade), “It is important to keep one’s personal health information private” (Erin Galvin), and, “nothing is private anymore, if someone wants to see my health care records, go for it” (Mark Galvin). The third question was; who has access to your personal health records? The three answers were as follows; “Me, my healthcare provider and people I give permission” (Chris Quade), “Only medical personal taking direct care of me, (Erin Galvin), “My doctors” (Mark Galvin). The fourth question asked was; how do you get a copy of your personal health care records? The three answers are as follows’ “By requesting it at the location in which the records are stored” (Chris Quade), “one-way s to ask my doctor for a copy
