This day was like most here at the Jersey Shore. The sun was shining, the water was glistening and the sky was cloudless. It was the epitome of the perfect beach day. Everything seemed perfect, but almost too perfect. As we finished our morning workout the other guards and I waited for stand assignments of the day. As always, I was hoping to have one of the more popular streets, so my day could be a little more exciting than usual. But of course I was disappointed yet again and was placed on H street. Thank goodness for these sounds because they got me out of my relaxing state of mind, because I noticed as the tide started to come in, the waters got a lot rougher. There were rips in between H street and J street, the one with those low life guards. I figured I should radio over to the next street and let them know, but there was no answer after I tried many times. The way these men treated me and the other girls was starting to get a little out of hand, but it was also out of my control. In an article by Trevor Bopp, he states “Masculine hegemony plays a role in the way we view women in workplaces…” Masculine hegemony is accepting the fact that men are in charge even if they don’t have a leadership position. Basically, women just listening to men because they are dominant, especially in that specific occupation. It’s not just used to hype up men, but to bring down women. Masculine Hegemony does not let women work to their full potential, because it down plays their skills and abilities. Women’s skills and abilities get down played by their fellow male coworkers because they don’t view women as equal. (52). Masculine Hegemony is a perfect way to describe how it is at Seaside Park Beach Patrol, us women just let men take charge of us because it’s been that way from the start and will most likely stay that way. That is why I never stoop down to their level and dish them the type of disrespect they dish

In our society women are not often seen as leaders. Men are the ones who are in power in our government and that stereotypical norm is what the media shoves in society’s face constantly. When I was young in Mastic Beach, we spent Saturday mornings on the porch eating pancakes made by mom and naming all the birds that flew by. When I was young in Mastic Beach, the scent of paint lingered on dads clothes as he taught me how to make the images in my head appear on the canvas in front of me. Waves crashed over rocks tall enough to pierce the sky as we reached the shore in the dinghy. I stepped into the crystal clear water and saw a plethora of seagulls around the rocky hills. “I’ll pick you up here in about 2 hours,” our charter captain called as he drove away, “Enjoy the Baths!” We started our trek to the beach, my mom and dad leading and my sister Emily and I trailing behind. As we reached the beach Emily grabbed my hand and pulled me ahead to see the beach.…
