Individuation was the process by which an individual became whole by integrating the disparate parts of their psychological being into the self. This means that they must accept all parts of themselves from the dark part one represses to the male/female psyche. Jung called the individuation process a heroic journey. Usually when people get power too quickly they end up forgetting what they really wanted and instead do whatever benefits them without thinking of the consequences that can occur. Later on, they may sometimes realize that what they did was wrong and they did what they did because they were powerful and “felt” like they could do whatever they wanted. This is exactly what happened to Abigail during The Crucible by Arthur Miller, she had her heart set on winning John Proctor’s love by getting rid of Goody Proctor in the beginning of the play, but when everyone started to support her in her mission to get “rid” of the “witches” in Salem she started to become a corrupt individual. Fear can be an individual’s greatest motivator while it could be another’s greatest inhibitor. In a group or society, fear could often grow into madness and when fear and chaos run hand in hand the effects could branch off into many different directions. Other times some characters show the trait of weakness, those characters are John Proctor, Mary Warren, and Ann Putnam.
