Often when teenagers enter the workforce it seems as though they are not quite ready for the responsibility and commitment, they are thrown in with little preparation. The average teenager will start their work life at Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Target, Burger King, or maybe even a weekly babysitting gig. Whatever job they get it requires the same set of requirements: responsibility, determination, and most importantly time. The things they learn from joining the workforce are important and cannot be taught anywhere else, it is an essential step for teenagers. For example, I just joined the workforce in April and feel as though I have started one step behind. I came in not knowing the importance of having a job and not being able to probably handle the time commitment. Being a nineteen year old who was just introduced to another thing to balance in my tricky time schedule I felt as though I was failing. The hours before work flew away and there was never time to do anything after I got back at 11. While work does not require you to bring it home, it requires a 5-10 hour commitment which is a lot of time to …show more content…
Spending time with their family can range from sitting in the living room and watching TV with their mother to going to Cousin Amanda’s wedding in New York. However, they have been told that going to work is important and school is important so they have already filled their life to the brim with those two roles. Teenagers are finding making time for family to be the most challenging aspect. It used to be what they would use their free time for but now they are lacking any free time. Also, when they are free they have to make an effort to maintain friendships. They often have to miss out on family parties and work holidays they are never used to being away for. It starts to create a distance between them and their home lives which is never a good idea. I am well versed now in the idea of having to choose work and school over family. I have spent many of days either leaving a family event for work or holing myself in my room because I had tons of homework that needed to be
