CORE 2062 strives to be a place where the passions of our students become skills, concepts transform into physical products, and zeal creates a positive community impact. Through our dedication to science and technology, lifelong friendships, and commitment to maintaining a strong presence in the community, our team exemplifies the true meaning of FIRST.

Our Team

Our team prioritizes unity between team members to ensure that each student has an enriching experience. This begins with a unified approach to the game as our whole team spends four days discussing strategy and robot design in a process that we call consensus. Consensus requires team agreement on important decisions. While difficult, this approach to choosing a preliminary

Subteams have around five members, allowing them to function as tight units that focus on specific aspects of the team. Subteams are particularly important for the growth of our students because they allow members to work closely with their mentors and peers. Students also have the opportunity to work in areas that are unique to their interests. Furthermore, we have team meetings at the start and end of each day, allowing us to maintain whole-team unity as we discuss our progress and next steps.

To further the enrichment of our members, we emphasize student leadership. Beyond the appointment of subteam leaders, we have three main positions: Student Spokesperson, Engineering Project Manager, and Safety Captain. When asked about the importance of student leadership, both students and mentors cite the confidence and real-world skills which are developed. Leadership is vital to our team because it gives students the sense that they can do great

We give a variety of demonstrations and presentations both to gain new sponsors and engage them in robotics. Throughout the year we also participate in numerous sponsor events such as GE Take Your Child to Work Day, Engineers Week at Rockwell, and Zeman Powertool Tour. Over 20 current students have personally interacted with sponsors and thereby learned new business skills in a hands on way.

Our work in the community would not be complete without the hours of volunteering our students put in. One example of this is the volunteering we have done for the Christmas Clearing Council. There, our students worked together to pick out toys, books, and warm clothes for children in struggling families during the holiday season. Our students had a lot of fun while realizing the impact they had on their community. As Abby put it, “I think it is really important to give back to the community which has done so much for all of us, both individually and as a

Though we did not win, the competition was an eye opener. It taught me two important things – teamwork and leadership. I learnt to not only assign tasks to members but to also create a sense of coherence and harmony that would bring out the full potential of the team. Moreover, the competition debunked many of the impractical ideas that I had on building and programming the robots.…

Benevolence It is Christmas morning, so you wake up and your is heart pumping with excitement to look under the Christmas tree for your presents. When you arrive your heart fills with much despair because you find nothing there. Unfortunately, this happens to kids all around the world, some of these kids may go to your school. Consequently, every year, as a tradition my grandmother gathers up all of her grandkids and we volunteer at the Salvation Army Intake Center encompassed with her church. Accountability, unity, and intentionality are fundamental elements of a successful team. All three of these elements are interdependent on each other, yet are significant on their own. For these elements to work, each member of a team must depend on each other’s contribution, but not rely on one member to do all the work. As well, an intentional goal must be set for all members to unify the same mentality. In my own experience with the Buckeye Twirl baton team, we fail to perform as a team and work as individuals.…

If I want my opinion valued, then I should value others’ opinions. If I want to be able to approach a Soldier with an issue, I need to be approachable and honest. I should set the example for my Soldiers.…

As a first year I found myself being one of the youngest if not the youngest one in ASAM 230. Although most of the students in ASAM 230 were seniors, this course would be most helpful to students in their second or third year of college. The assignments we are asked to read, write and discuss in class are directed to help students recognize their interests. For example, reading about Community-Based organizations and becoming more knowledgeable on how they are coordinated can be essential to a student who is still trying to decipher what they want to do with their college career. Most importantly the paper, What Matters to Me and Why?, is the epitome of ASAM 230 as we are able to connect our experiences in service learning and are able to apply…

Throughout my four years at the University of Connecticut I participated in a variety of different one-time service projects known as Community Service Days. For my first year at the university, I was a member of the Community Service Learning Community. As a participant, I was asked to complete thirty hours of community service each semester, a goal that I exceeded each time. To illustrate the types of volunteerism I participated in I have included only several of the many activities I participated in throughout my college career. Once, I volunteered to usher special needs swimmers along with their unified partners to and from the pool during a Special Olympics swim meet.…

In manifold years, the African American community has suffered harshly from institutional racism. As Blacks were forced into becoming chattel property for Whites, they were also dehumanized from their identity. Torture was also included in oppressing blacks as they planted fear into the mindset of African Americans that they cannot even love their own skin color. Lack of opportunities such as educationally, economically, and politically have been the main factors that our community lacks for "success” due from oppression. Philanthropy is a way for our Black Leaders to restore the lack of resources such as meals, housing, educational opportunities, and guidance in the communities.…

Owing to the mutual understanding between teammates, we got to share and consider each other’s thoughts as well as made important decisions together which reduced a great deal of problems and conflicts within the group.…
