Anything around us is generally matter. Everything we touch, the buildings we see, and the cars we ride in. “Energy is the ability to do work, or the ability to move or elicit change in matter (Castro).” It is important to know that energy is always conserved. It cannot be created nor destroyed. There are also two different kinds of energy, potential, and kinetic. …show more content…
Part B: Determining the base line energy capture
5) Measure 80mL of water in a graduated cylinder.
6) Take 80mL of water and transfer to the 150mL beaker.
7) Put Beaker on the stand, and then put the thermometer in the water without touching the glass.
8) Put the chip directly underneath the beaker.
9) Measure the initial temperature.
10) Then light the chip on fire.
11) Calculate the percent of energy captured by the water. Take the total energy captured by the water divided by the total energy of the chip, and multiplying by 100.
Part C: The Building of our calorimeter
12) Grab your materials for your experiment; which is a tuna can, and aluminum foil.
13) Modify your tuna can by cutting the top and bottom out and adding eight small holes to the base of the can. Also cut a hole around an inch wide in your aluminum foil to insert the thermometer.
14) Put the can over your one baked chip.
15) Next light the chip on fire.
16) Place the beaker full of water on top, covered with aluminum foil, and place the thermometer in.
