Introduction
Luke Dobson is a 43-year-old man with severe learning disabilities and epilepsy. He has lived in a residential home for 10 years since his parents, who are now in their 70s, had difficulties in keeping him at home. However, they still visit Luke regularly and describe him as a ‘charming, strong and energetic man’. Luke cannot communicate verbally so he uses a mix of Makaton sign language and some of his own special signs. Unfortunately, one night Luke suffered a stroke and was admitted to a general ward in a hospital on the other side of town which was about 25 miles from where his parents lived, which was an issue for them because they wanted to be included in the decision making process for Luke. There are consequences for healthcare professionals not following the guidelines of the Equality Act 2010, for example they could lose their job, or if it happens multiple times they would have to pay a fine, also it would give the organisation a bad reputation and could lead to permanent closure. To promote anti-discriminatory practice in an organisation, policies and codes of practices should be implemented. Codes of practices are vital in an organisation to provide a good service for service users. All healthcare professionals should be fully aware of their obligations under the Equality Act and should receive any necessary training. Good practice in a health and social care setting would impact the service user because they would feel safe and at ease knowing their needs were being encountered for and it would promote independence and rights for the service …show more content…
For example, in the hospital a multidisciplinary team including doctors, nurses and physiotherapists all take care of Luke’s needs. Doctors are there for him because they diagnose and prescribe him with any medication he is in need of. Nurses are there for Luke to provide him with the daily care he is entitled to.
