He was nervous and full of the desire for vengeance. He was persecuted by Dun, so he, in turn, wanted Dun to feel his pain. He wanted Dun to feel powerless against Alaric, a man characterized as strong by his steady and confident manner. The Avenger is trembling and haggard before his city’s enemy, characterizing him as unconfident and weak. The Avenger was free from jail but not from his sorrow, and he was powerless. The Avenger’s unconfident mannerisms are juxtaposed with his confident leadership at the end of the story. “‘Listen,’ he said, ‘don't be afraid. These soldiers are going on to join their army.
