Analysis Of Hamlet Soliloquies

Improved Essays
– My favorite Hamlet soliloquy is “To be, or not to be.” I know that this soliloquy is popular and almost cliché in a way; however, I think that this soliloquy is important and does have a large impact on the play. This soliloquy is relatable and contains a larger purpose. The speech speaks on his discontentment and possibly the reader’s.
3 – Alliteration: “Therefore I have entreated him along, with us to watch the minutes of this night.”
Allusion: “In the most high and palmy state of Rome,
A little ere the mightiest Julius fell,
The graves stood tenantless and the sheeted dead
Did squeak and gibber in the Roman streets.”
Antithesis: “To be, or not to be, that is the question—
Whether ’tis Nobler in the mind to suffer
The Slings and Arrows

Foreshadowing: An example of foreshadowing is when Hamlet’s father came to him as a ghost to inform him of his murder, this caused a rage within Hamlet that foreshadows his revenge. This revenge led to the death of his uncle, mother, and himself.
4 – I think a big symbol in Hamlet is poison. It symbolizes deceit, revenge, and death. Hamlet learns from the ghost (his father) that his own uncle, Claudius killed him. – Which was by him pouring poison into King Hamlet’s ear. This encounter demonstrates how the need for power can corrupt someone. This need for power caused Claudius to poison and sadly kill his own brother. Another example is when Laertes and Claudius were planning to kill Hamlet. They also used poison. Lastly, poison kills Gertrude (this is betrayal because it was Claudius that did this), and eventually caused the deaths of Laertes, Claudius, and

7 – I think the ultimate message in Hamlet is not to let anything fully consume you. Hamlet let his need for revenge consume him. Also, his need to avenge his father. In a way, Hamlet causes his own downfall by his obsession with killing Claudius to avenge his father. By plotting Claudius' death, Claudius feels the need to protect himself. In the end, revenge kills Hamlet, and most of the other characters.
8 – I believe Horatio is the most admirable character in this play because of, his honesty, his reasoning/intelligence, and his loyalty to Hamlet. Although he had a minor role, I think he has a significant impact on the play and the other characters. He was Hamlet’s dearest friend, and the person who told Hamlet’s life story. Horatio loves Hamlet a lot, but doesn’t try to over power or persuade him. Overall, Horatio is a strong character who is unwavering in his friendship

Revenge captures the hearts and minds of powerful rulers, lowly homemakers, and innocent children alike, and while it can be all consuming and superficially satisfying, vengeance always harms those who seek it. All know the blaze of vengeful feelings, however, not all realize the impossibility of truly successful revenge. The characters in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet find themselves obsessing over vengeance as their decaying country and corrupted court fall to shambles. Hamlet loses his father to murder, then, surrounded by the suspicion of family and friends, his fraudulent uncle becomes king. Likewise, Laertes, his father slain by Hamlet, is subject to the surveillance of many, constantly watched and noted upon.…

To begin with, revenge is a very predominant theme in this play mainly because of the importance given to it through the main character and many of the foil characters. In particular, however, Hamlet’s own need for revenge reveals a great deal about Shakespeare’s idea of revenge and that the need for it can cause people to lose balance in their lives. Throughout his conquest to kill Claudius and avenge his father, Hamlet’s balance and quality in his life slowly deteriorates with each progression he…

Throughout all of the novels we have read this year, each one has taught me that literature can always have a deeper meaning. Different writings can all have different meanings around the world, or even to the person standing next to you. There is such a variety of interpretations of literature. Through reading “A Streetcar Named Desire”,“Hamlet”, and “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, the main theme that stuck out to me was that tough, emotional experiences can have an effect on characters’ minds in a vast number of ways.…

One of Shakespeare’s most interesting, yet often forgotten about, soliloquy’s takes place at the end of Act four, Scene four in Hamlet. The soliloquy occurred near the end of the play, after Hamlet had just left his home. In this scene, Hamlet watched as the Prince of Norway, Fortinbras, lead his large army to fight for a small piece of land, ultimately worth nothing. This caused Hamlet to think about the situation he was in, being that his father was killed by his uncle Claudius, who then took the throne and married Hamlet’s mother.…

In the Tragedy of Hamlet the characters play the seven deadly sins that all humans have committed at some point at our lives. With that being said I would like to describe the top three that I personally think are the most important during the play. The first one is envy- envy is the desire to have what others have in possession. Pride- the is the excessive belief in the abilities which interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of god. The last one is Lust- is inordinate for the pleasures of the body.…

Hamlet's first soliloquy contrasts the controlled dialogue he exchanges with his mother and uncle. His true emotions of anger, hatred, and grief pour out when he is alone with the audience. He characterizes Denmark as a “weary” (1.2.34) land filled with “rank” and “gross” inhabitants (1.2.137). Due to his mother’s remarriage and uncle’s coronation, Hamlet loses all hope for the people of his country and no longer sees the beauty of his kingdom. So distraught by his family’s betrayal, Hamlet wishes for relief in the form of death.…

Shakespeare’s “To Be or Not to Be” soliloquy in Hamlet is possibly the most quoted passage of any of his works and even those who have never read the text of the play have likely at some point in their lives heard the famous words “to be or not to be”. While many are familiar with this opening line it is only when one is familiar of the context in which it is spoken that they realize its true meaning which may come as a shock. These lines are spoken in the context of the protagonist contemplating suicide. Shakespeare likely wrote Hamlet’s soliloquy using inclusive language and philosophical concepts when discussing suicide because during the Elizabethan Era when the play was written, suicide was considered a mortal sin and the audience may have viewed Hamlet as a…

Considering the fact that Hamlet comes from royalty, his duty is to be strong and fearless, yet the reader witnesses Hamlet’s vulnerability multiple times. This vulnerability and uncertainty of death and suicide alludes to Hamlet’s diminishing character. In act three scene one, Hamlet questions life or death. The first six words of his soliloquy establishes an important balance and also includes a direct opposition, “to be or not to be”. For Hamlet this six word phrase means life versus death and the contemplation of a state of being versus a state of not being (being alive versus being dead).…

“Hamlet” is a grim play about greed, betrayal, revenge, and death written by William Shakespeare, “Hamlet” is Shakespeare’s most tragic play he ever written. “Hamlet” describes the story Prince Hamlet who finds out his father, King Hamlet was murdered by his uncle; King Claudius who married Queen Gertrude; when King Hamlet reemerges as a ghost. Ghost Hamlet reveals he wants his son to avenge his death. When Prince Hamlet received the new shocking information he then had an elaborate plan to kill King Claudius which causes nothing but turmoil and death at the end. Initially, when I finished the reading of “Hamlet” my emotional response was depressing because of how Shakespeare deciding to end the story.…
