Throughout United States history there has been a constant debate on gun control. Should guns be banned even though it is one of our civil rights infringed upon us by our founding fathers or to ban it because of the events that have transpired in modern time? Either way gun laws have become progressively strict based on various shootings, massacres, and deaths across the nation. America's gun culture stems from colonial history and revolutionary roots. Meaning our right to bear arms have been around for a long time. But how many citizens have to die in order for people to realize that gun control is a problem that must be faced soon? Molly Ivins essay, “Get a Knife, Get a Dog, but Get Rid of Guns” shares her opinion on this controversial topic. Ivin believes that guns should be banned or at least restricted and I agree with her stand completely. While the right to own a gun is our second amendment right, gun laws should become stricter to minimize the deaths in our country.
Molly Ivin’s essay discusses the topic of guns. She starts the essay off by stating that she is not anti-gun but she believes there are more sensible ways to protect yourself. Such as using a knife, or learning martial arts. “Consider the merits of the knife. In the first place, you have catch up with someone in order to stab him. A general substitution of knives for guns would promote physical fitness. We'd turn into a whole nation of great runners. Plus, knives don't ricochet. And people are seldom killed while cleaning their knives.”(Ivin 214) In this statement Ivin suggests and introduces the benefits of using a knife rather than a gun.
