Over the past five years Americans have seen many horrific tragedies related to gun violence. Each of these terrible events has been accompanied with scrutinizing media coverage, and subsequently, a push on government level for increased gun control. On the surface these movements to take away guns from Americans may seem justified because of these events. In reality the federal government is encroaching upon our Second Amendment, the right to bear arms. Conspiracy theorists have been around for thousands of years. In our society we are taught that those who perpetrate conspiracy theories and those who believe them are paranoid, uneducated, and most of the time psychologically impaired. For example, in 1938 Germany established gun control leaving millions of people unarmed and helpless to the ensuing extermination leading up to and during World War II (Heyes). The right to bear arms is one of the original amendments proclaimed in the Bill of Rights and was adopted all the way back in 1791. During a meeting in Congress, George Washington was recorded saying, “The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference. They deserve a place of honor with all that is good. When firearms go, all goes. We need them every hour.” ("George Washington Biography") Another one of our Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson, weighed in with his opinion as to why it is so important to maintain our right to bear arms. "The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government" (Elliot). Why should we care about the right to bear arms? There have been hundreds of thousands of instances in the past when carrying a weapon has prevented crimes from happening. The problem is that the media neglects to report these events because they are not deemed to be newsworthy compared to events of gun related murder or mass hysteria. Recent events and their portrayal in the media have been a cause of concern with those who think the government is trying to take our guns away.
