Everyday students are facing daily challenges to make decisions in an environment full of pressure and uncertainty. They are faced with cultural, social and economic issues that it is difficult for them to handle. Firstly, Guidance can be defined as advice or information aimed at resolving a problem or difficulty, especially as given by someone in authority. According to Jones, he defines “guidance as a personal help given by someone, it is designed to assist a person in deciding where he wants to go, what he wants to do, or how he can best accomplish his purpose; it assists him in solving problems that arises in life. It does not solve problems for the individual but helps him to solve them. The focus of guidance is the individual, not the problem; its purpose is to promote the growth of the individual in self direction”. Hence, in order for the teacher to bring out the best in a child, she needs to acquire the skills of guidance and counseling in terms of giving the correct advice to the student. The teacher needs to know and understand each and every student sitting in his/her classroom from their family backgrounds to the academic performances. For example Mere is an average student in Commercial studies and Social science and is outstanding in basic science and math’s after completing her year 10 certificate she approach her teacher for guidance and counseling in order to select her subjects for year 11. The teacher informed Mere the different fields of careers for the different subject combinations. So she asks Mere what was her ambition, Mere replied that she has not made up her mind yet. When the teacher looks at the result she can determine the subject areas where she has weaknesses and strengths. Mere is good at math’s therefore her subject combination would be Math’s, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Now, the teacher advisers and counsel mere the reasons she has to take up the science subjects. When the teacher gives the right advice, the student will be able to manage her way through and will have a brighter future.
