The group project with my fellow group members Avery Ezell, DaShawn Gilliam and Ayaka Matsunaga was a success. Our topic focused on mentoring where we decided to partner with the Wicomico Mentoring Project in Salisbury, Maryland. The project provides “adult role models who volunteer to work with students to improve their grades, attendance and behaviors” (Wicomico County Public Schools). The coordinator Mark Thompson was more than glad to become our mentor to help our group make an impact on his organization. Not everyone who attends college are successful at completing the courses needed to graduate. For many reasons, college students are forced to drop out willingly, are withdrawn by administration, or simply lose interest in furthering their education. However, the college students who complete college successfully and make it to graduation share some habits that make the odds of being successful work in their favor. Many college students succeed because they make it a priority to attend and involve themselves in class sessions regularly, take control of their education, and nurture relationships with the instructors on their school campus. As such, my reactions towards what I deemed pastoral care was very negative in that I felt ill-equipped and was way too intimidated to handle what potentially seemed to be a day to day pastoral care overload. The first eye opener came when I read about the distinctions between pastoral care and pastoral counseling.…
