Whether this controversial president should be loved or hated is open to interpretation. His character was highly contradictive and his life was quite the emotional rollercoaster. Like every other ordinary person, he had his loyal supporters and his brutal enemies. To many historians, he would be considered the country’s greatest leader since the Founding Fathers. Throughout his life, he owned over one hundred slaves. In one instance during his reign, one of his slaves escaped his plantation. He declared that if that slave was returned, he would receive three hundred lashes-a punishment that would most likely kill the slave. In terms of being a slave master, he was very strict. When he returned home after his presidency, he continued to own slaves. Jackson and his administration were sympathetic towards slavery and hostile towards abolitionism. Many people believe that we should apologize for having such a president. Many also believe that we should celebrate the fact that he was our president. I wouldn’t necessarily celebrate but an apology would be given to help reason with his critics. The Trail of Tears was truly unfair and slavery should not have happened, but Andrew Jackson was the first president to genuinely care about the average person. That care he had continued through other presidencies and continued to grow. Because of the victory at the Battle of New Orleans, people began to have more pride for their country. Although his emotions were poorly controlled, that contributed to his great reign. His passion and determination could not be demolished by anyone. His refusal to be crushed inspires many. Having such an emotional man as president is something to be proud
