Grading Scale: A Persisting Problem Among Students Essays

Entering the classroom, sheets of white typing paper printed out sitting on the desks; starting the day off with the notification of the classroom grade can be a frightening thought. The eighteen year old, tall, and slender girl slides into her desk and prepares herself for what the paper holds for her future report card. Verbally, the teacher signals to flip over the piece of paper and look at semester grades. As the papers are being flipped, all at once negative cries shout out. This can not be right! There is something wrong! Why are there grades missing? Why is this not an A? As Aquilino states, “It’s not like they should get something they didn’t earn” (Roth 1). On the other hand, when a parent is worried about their student in a class, action can be taken. What is there to worry about? Everything. These parents have their student enrolled in school to gain a higher education for the future. By doing so, there are ways parents can keep up on the grades a child is receiving in a class. Guskey states, “Letter grades, for example, offer parents and others a brief description of students’ achievement and the adequacy of their performance” (1). Letter grades are given out frequently in and out of the classroom. The letter grade given out may lack what it is actually being reflected. Those letter grades can send out a different message to parents, than to the student or teacher. While a student may see a grade because of lack of effort, a parent may see a letter grade where it can be easily pointed back towards the teacher. Teachers get feedback from parents who receive notifications about their child in school classrooms. As the higher education tells parents of students in school, “Using letter grades requires the abstraction of a great deal of information into a single symbol” (Gaskey 4). In addition to informing the parents of a classroom grade, the student and teacher must inform them about the specific cut-offs between letter grades. Without this being stated there can be major controversy between one another about a simple idea. The letter grade a parent views lacks the
