Nineteen Eighty-Four is a political novel written with the purpose of warning readers in of the dangers of totalitarian government. Individual versus society is one of the main themes in George Orwell’s 1949 dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, as well as the principal conflict of the novel.

Winston and Julie are considered as individuals as they opposes what the Party says and rules and that makes then unorthodox. They rebel on the personal level and eventually get caught and “reeducated”, after that, even though they meet on the street, they do no acknowledge each other anymore. The Party is the society as it surrounds Winston and Julia. The Party controls the lifes of all the citizens in Oceania. They control their physical, psychological and emotional life all together.
