The novel, Of Mice And Men, by John Steinbeck full of many different characters, each with their own unique set of characteristics. The story takes place during the Great Depression where work and sustainability were scarce. People are forced to work menial jobs to make whatever money they can get. However, Steinbeck focuses on two characters that each use their psyche to maneuver through life with the first being George and the second being Curley. Some of the characters are shown to have changed over the course of the story, one of them being George. George is one of the main characters in the novel and his actions can directly affect the direction of the story. He learns to use his psyche to maneuver and control Lenny as well as his environment,

They thought of each other as family and George from time to time would say a little song for George to remind him of that. “‘We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us,’”(Steinbeck 14) and then Lennie would say, “‘...because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you,’”(Steinbeck 14). George and Lennie, in a way, treated each other like brothers with George being the mature older brother and Lennie is the little brother that never grew up. They promised that they would always be there for each other and they would go off and do great things together. They would own a ranch together and live peacefully there with no one else except them with the exception of Candy who came along later in the story. As the story progresses, however, George encounters the other men at the ranch and each one of them react to the reality that George travels with Lennie. George informs every one of them about him and Lennie and as a result, most of the guys comment on their relationship. Slim says that it seems that everybody in the world is scared of each other(Steinbeck 35) and earlier the boss initially thought that George was only taking Lennie along with him was to take his pay away from him. When Curley first attempted to fight Lennie, George interjected himself into the conversation saying, “We travel together,’”(Steinbeck 25). The author says that George said this coldly which indicates that George wasn’t telling Curley that he travelled with Lennie to simply give him an answer to his question. He said it in a way that gave Curley a warning to not mess with Lennie or
