The discovery of genetic engineering is a huge breakthrough in science. A promise of the ability to genetically increase the rate of which food is being produced has convinced many individuals to endorse this system of modifying food. In 2013, genetically engineered crops made up almost half of the total farmland in the United States used for growing crops (Fernandez-Cornejo). Scientists have boasted of the tremendous benefits since the discovery of genetic engineering, but have never talked about the consequences of utilizing this procedure. These foods are being fed to animals that provide us with dairy and meat, which is then passed on to humans through the consumption of these products. Large companies that manufacture these products, such as Monsanto, have monopolized our most basic needs and withheld the information of where and how the products were manufactured. The major food corporations have managed to transform agriculture into an industrial technique, which consists of inhumane acts and unsanitary conditions for plants and animals as well as genetically altering crops for their convenience. The inability for consumers to know what they are consuming potentially heightens the risk for diseases as well as the rise of ignorance among patrons and sad to say, this has been going on for many years. The origin of genetically modified foods dates back to 1973 when Hubert Boyer and Stanley Cohen discovered a way to manipulate and add genes to a variety of organism and to induce a range of different effects. This discovery made it possible for food to be modified to benefit major companies such as Monsanto and DuPont. An example of this is corn, a universal crop used not only to feed and flavor our food but also to grow large quantities of penicillin (“10 Ways We Use corn”).
