Gender stereotyping has always played a big role in society. It has defined and divided us. It has categorized and limited us. Literature is one of the mediums which gender stereotyping has influenced. Gender stereotyping is evident right from the beginning with children books already imbedding subtle stereotypes into our subconscious. However society is slowly starting to shift towards a gender revolution as we speak. This is evident in TV shows, the media and the everyday family life. This shift is becoming evident in literature and can be seen in the following novels I have read.
My first novel is a romance called ‘Flipped’ by Wendelin van Draaren. I think this book should definitely …show more content…
This novel is aimed at younger readers so the stereotypes are much more subtle but nonetheless important. This novel starts off very ordinarily, the protagonist is a very a stereotypical male nerd. He doesn’t like sport and reads comic books. His family is very stereotypical. The mom stays at home and does the cleaning and cooking. The dad works. Its all very normal. However after a fictional magical occurrence the world’s gender roles are switched. Suddenly its normal for the mom to work and the dad does the ironing and cleaning. The whole idea of switching the gender roles is very thought provoking. The idea that a book about such a simple concept having to be classified as fiction shows how imbedded gender stereotypes are in us subconsciously. I think this book should be included in the library as it is important for young readers to see how roles can be switched and to help them think about gender roles in society. This is a very obvious book to be include in our library. Many characters in this novel break gender boundaries and stereotypes. This novel is lead by two strong characters, a male and a female. It is empowering to have both genders treated equally. Both Tris and Four do the same activities, they work together to fight their battle and do not live up to their respective gender roles. Tris is very brave, feisty, and fights to stand up for herself. Four is sensitive, quiet and thoughtful. One of the most evident gender stereotyping is in the character of Four’s mom, Evelyn. Evelyn was initially a victim of abuse. Her husband abused her physically and emotionally. She then went on to fake her own death to escape and later went on to build her own army to fight the faction system. She shows characteristics of a strong woman who doesn’t live up to the normal stereotypes by her independence, determinance and initiative. However she also shows the vulnerability of women regardless of their characteristics. She displays the idea that no matter how the individual defeats stereotypes woman as a whole still face gender related issues such as abuse. I think it is very important for young girls to understand how these issues affect woman but also to know that they can do something to stop it. To know that no woman should have to face
