Gender Roles In Advertisement Gender roles have been influencing the culture of all societies since the beginning of social groups. It is easy for people to sort others out into a certain amount of groups that stereotypically define them. The main problem with this ideology is that not everyone, arguably no one, fits into these clearly defined spaces. Although society has made a headway into breaking down the walls of these hierarchical roles, there are still people that want to divide people into traditional identities. One of the spaces in the public that still needs a lot work is the realm of advertising. Advertisements in magazines and on television attempt to advertise to specific demographics, even when it is not necessary, effectively excluding many …show more content…
The way the “hero” dismisses “feminine” roles and relegates them to women. The fact that not a single women is in the entire advertisement whenever there is no reason to target men specifically for a low calorie soda. It purposely tells women what they are allowed to enjoy and what they 're not allowed to enjoy. The unnecessary over representation of men inadvertently leads to an under representation of women. Although we have come a long way as a society in terms of gender roles and identities, this advertisement shows that there is still a lot of work needed before women are respected as true equals that they are. People don 't always fit into the molds that others make for them. Women are allow to vote, wear the close they want and go wherever they want to go, but all of that is for nothing if the media and society, like in this advertisement, laugh in the face of it. We need to bring the society around us to believe that people don 't need to be separated into unnecessary groups and need to be respected as individuals.
