Reality is an Illusion As we continue watching reality television even though we know that what we’re looking at isn’t ultimately really real, we somehow convince ourselves that it is. Philosopher Albert Einstein suggests, “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” In other words, when we watch reality television a lot of times we forget that what we 're seeing isn 't really real. There are a lot of people out there that think that what they see on reality television is real life and it 's not, it is all carefully scripted and cut and put together. For example, Marlon says to Truman, “Tru, we 've known each other since before we were in long pants.” (Weir) Marlin has been in that world since he was 7 years old and he is now 30. The reality is, he is doing the things he is told to do and saying the things he is told to say. He has the illusion of thinking that he has any sort of free will or choice but he really doesn 't. Even the audience 's lives are consumed by the Truman show because of the entertainment they receive. For example, the waitress in the bar, the two old women sitting on their sofa, the two security guards, and the man in the bathtub all sit by 24/7 and watch a show that is based off of a made up character. And like all reality television, like the kardashians, a lot of time we forget that what we 're seeing isn 't really real. In other words, they do it willingly whereas they are not being forced to drink the alcohol or take the drugs. In the movie, Less than Zero, a very rich kid named Julian has become addicted to cocaine with his girlfriend Blair and his two friends come together to try and rescue him. Although the problem is, you can’t save someone who is already addicted to drugs. In the film, Julian’s friend Matthew tries to help Julian by saying, “Julian? Can you stay clean, for one week? For just one week? I’ll do everything i can to help you. But i need you to help me too.” (Kanievska) It’s not the cocaine that made Julian an addict, it was the need to escape from a rough reality. Julian doesn’t want to accept the reality that 's actually there so him and his girlfriend created an alternate one themselves by abusing drugs. A friend of Blair tells her, “You look terrible, but hey no problem, all you need is a better cut of cocaine.” (Kanievska) People can 't cope with what they see so they would rather be blissfully ignorant and almost slip themselves into a coma than they would to do deal what is actually out in the real
