Throughout the Second World War, Spain was a non-aggressive state that was not engaged in any type of warfare. When WWII was about to begin and countries were starting to pick alliances, Spain was just recovering from a three yearlong civil war. By that time Spain was inflicted with poverty, the people were starving, and the Spaniards had their share of war. Keeping in mind all the pressure that was put on Spain to join the war, Franco was smart enough to play the system and benefit from everyone. Spain was able to relate to the German Nazis the most, due to past dialogue and a similar political view, yet was still able to receive aid and support from the Americans too. Franco’s “personal beliefs were dominated by a devout sense of loyalty and propriety” and this was one major conflict inherent between Spain and entering the war. First Spain had no appreciable quarrel with any country involved in the war. IT was on good terms with Germany and Italy due to the relations that Franco had and the support that he received from them during the civil war. By the second week of the civil war, Franco had successfully sought military assistance from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, while Russia was supporting the Franco-opposing Republican party. Ironically, Hitler and Stalin went from enemies to best friends when they joined forces in August-September 1939 to begin World War II in Europe. In my opinion, this indirectly declared the beginning of the end of the Spanish civil war. As for the rest of Europe, General Franco had received some military training in France, under the guidance of Marshals Petain, and Foch, who had been suffering from a wound inflicted by the Nazis. Furthermore, due to his time spent in France, Franco had great respect for the military
