Discussing further details on business unions, the decline of union membership, collective bargaining and work agreements. With these topics we go further to into understand on the effects they have on the United States. Unionism in the United States, first, we begin with Business Unionism. Which is the most common type of philosophy followed. This type of union follows along with objectives that benefit workers. Examples, higher pay, better benefits, shorter hours and improved work conditions. First taking note that types of jobs where unionization is high varies. In government, transportation, telecommunications, construction and manufacturing the rate of workers who are parts of unions are very high. Second, the difference in men and women who are parts of unions varies as well with men being 14% and women being 11%. Now we go into greater details on the real decline. In the 1950’s 25% of employed wage and salary workers belonged to unions, which had gone down drastically in 2005 to 12.5%. There are two different major reasons why this may be. The first is structural changes. These types of changes revolve around changes that are unfavorable to union membership that have occurred in the economy and labor force. Beginning with the employment having shifted way from traditional unionized industries. Example, the United States domestic employment has moved from manufactured goods to services. Also, demands made by consumers have changed manufactures to getting goods from foreign countries. Where products are cheaper to make and buy. An example of this is the automobile business or clothing and textiles production. The next factor relating to the heavy decline of unionism is the unusually high proportion of employment being concentrated among women, youths and part time workers. For a general understanding collective bargain is basically the negotiation of labor contracts that are work agreements between a company and a union. Now we go into further detail on the different types of work agreements and what goes on within those discussions. The most common things discussed would be, wages, hours and working conditions overall for all union employees. The types of things that happen also vary upon the type of union one is a part of. For instance, in a closed shop union a worker must be or become a member of the union before being hired by that company. Those in transportation or construction industries only allow this type of union legally. Due to the Taft-Hartley Act closed shops were determined illegal so as contrast Union shop was created. Which permits the employer to hire nonunion workers but requires their workers to join a union within 30 days or relinquish their job. The last is open shop, where an employer may hire a union or nonunion worker and those who are nonunion are not required to join the union or pay any
