E. M. Forster expresses his personal struggles with owning property in his excerpt titled “My Wood”. Through the fame and fortune presented to him after his most prominent novel, A Passage of India was published, the opportunity to expand his horizons and purchase land was introduced. Often times, countless individuals believe owning land and experiencing economic growth in a personal matter may make someone feel enlightened or perhaps powerful. However, for Forster, the experience only brought upon feelings of misery and self-condemnation. Putting the origins of earth into perspective, does mankind have the right to annex the land that once belonged to various animals? Forster considers this question to be tremendously important as it puts into question how we as the human race live our everyday life. Also, Forster brings to light, if someone is able to own property, it is purely theirs or should it be shared by all humans? “My Wood” is an essay revolving around how property affects someone's character, confidence, goals, and status. Forster stresses throughout his essay that wealth, property, and possessions may seem ideal from an outside perspective, yet it only brought him mental hardship. The only way people are able to feel fulfillment in their life is to find it within themselves, instead of searching for it through materialism. Materialism has been a never-ending tunnel built by society to make money and control the sensuous of power citizens feel. The statement, “Property produces a man of weight, and it is a man of weight who failed to get into the Kingdom of Heaven.”, expresses how property causes humans to become filled with greed and are unable to identify themselves without their belongings. When and individuals become consumed by possessions, their soul purpose and source of false happiness comes from it; this false sense of security is detrimental to someone and will distract them from the true essence and importance of
