The Importance Of Food Stamp Reform

Improved Essays
Recently I went to my local grocery store and as I was checking out, I saw something that disturbed me. There was a young man in front of me that was paying with an EBT card and was an obvious drug user, as he was displaying his lack of teeth and the sores coving his body. Not only was it the fact he was a substance abuser and paying with food stamps, but the items he was purchasing also troubled me. In his cart he only had junk food that was up to the rim and there was nothing in his buggy that could make a decent meal. Many people look at food stamps to be a wonderful program. However, I believe the food stamp program needs to be reformed, showing it has high cost, fraud and is unlimited.

For example, The Daily Caller reports a story of Adam Sylvain, a Georgia Mason University Student. Sylvain has stated that his roommate told him he applied for food stamps and ended up getting $200 a month (Montogomery). This extra money he was receiving caused him to save over $5,000 in cash each summer. Sylvain also reported that he knew of other college students who were doing the same things. Another problem with fraud is that many people lie. The amount of food stamps a household receives each month depends on the size of the family and income. Some people lie about their income and size of their family to obtain more food stamps. SNAP fraud also happens when SNAP benefits are exchanged for cash. In 2012 close to 1,400 stores were shut down for fraud and nearly 700 stores were indorsed for other violations such as the sale of unqualified items (Payton). Jerome Corsi wrote an example how outrageous people can be when it comes to food stamp fraud by stating in his article:
“In Louisiana, October 14th 2013, police were called to two Walmart stores when there was a temporary power outage in the EBT system, removing spending limits on the food stamp cards. When the word got around that there was no limit, people started rioting in the Walmart’s, stripping the shelves and trashing the place. Wal-Mart discovered shoppers with as little as cents on their food-stamp cards were attempting to steal as much as $700

The items that can be bought with an EBT card is problematic also.
The biggest problem I have with food stamps is what can be purchased with them. According to Food and Nutrition Service, soft drinks, candy, cookies, snack crackers, ice cream, sea food and cakes are food items and therefore can be purchased (Payton). I do not have a problem that an EBT card can buy bread, cereals, fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products. However, I do have a problem that junk food can be bought with food stamps. I believe the only food that should be purchased with SNAP benefits is items to make a meal.
In conclusion, SNAP benefits are doing more harm to America than good. The food stamps program is too costly, filled of fraud and overall unfair. It robs people’s chances to improve. There is no doubt that food stamps need to be reformed. The altering of SNAP benefits is just one step closer to making America great

The United States Government has put a food stamp program in place as part of its anti-poverty effort. Some people argue that programs like the food stamp program create an “entitlement” type of society. As students, we were asked to take the (SNAP) Food Stamp challenge. SNAP is the foundation of the nutrition assistance programs. This program provides over 47 million individuals in nearly 23 million low-income households (Rosenbaum, 2013). We, students, were allotted only seven dollars a day to spend on food per person. What I realized while taking this challenge shocked me; to understand how families who are less fortunate than mine manage to feed themselves is astounding for what little they are given.…

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) acts as America’s safety net and is the main foundation for nutrition assistance programs. The program offers over 50 million participants in approximately 23 million low-income households with cards they can use to purchase food each month. Because eligibility is not limited to restricted, SNAP serves different kinds of people who live in low-income households, this includes families with children, disabled people, elderly folks, and those who are temporarily unemployed. “About 72% of SNAP recipients live in households with children; more than one-quarter live in households with seniors or people with disabilities.” Although the SNAP program offers many types of benefits such as food security,…

The Welfare Reform Act of 1996 changed the entire program for the better, but it is still being misused by its recipients. The programs have become abused again and need to be reformed again in order to prevent wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars. America's welfare programs are redundant and inefficient in their goals. The welfare state encourages dependence, which is why welfare programs need to be reformed. Welfare dependence also creates behavioral poverty, which is causing continued dependence on welfare programs.…

Just as society is concerned about expenses and profits, elected representatives needs to have the same assessment of costs and benefits in regards to attaining savings through cuts in existing Texas aid programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which is mostly funded by federal money. Even though it provides nutritional aid, policymakers should tighten the controls on the program because it is non-taxable income, has loopholes, and increases government spending. As stated in the article The Next Welfare Reform: Food Stamps by Jason Riley, “between 2000 and 2013, SNAP caseloads nationwide grew to 47.6 million from 17.2 million, and spending grew to $80 billion from $20.6 billion (15).” As the Texas House and Senate look for ways to reduce the deficit, it would be wise to review the costs, potentially to reduce spending, as well as the savings associated with the program.…

Millions of dollars have been wasted on people that do not even need the government’s help, and the others that honestly need it, go on working hard, to earn money for food. The government believes they are shortening hunger when clearly, they are making it worst. Food Stamps is the second most expensive welfare there is. We set out to find a practical way to build a bridge across that chasm.” Milo Perkins was the first administrator of the first food stamp program, which began in 1939. Starting from physical stamps to now using an electronic card system, the food stamp program evolved and expanded greatly over the past 78 years. The Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) has not only helped low income families, but also the farmers and the economy of the United States.…

There was a reported incident in 2013 where there was a glitch in the system that allowed all EBT card holders to have unlimited spending limits in their cards. There was complete chaos in local Walmart's as people cleared the shelves and scrambled for any little thing they saw like savages that had not eaten in days. Some people walked out with 8-10 carts full of groceries. Although it was only a glitch for a few hours the damage was done. As soon as the system was back up the people still in line left the shopping carts there and left.…
