Food Intake
Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. (Hippocrates) Receiving knowledge about nutrition is invaluable. Understanding the nutritional value of the foods you eat can be the difference in living a long healthy life and living a short sickly one. Everything you eat should be an asset to your body, not a liability. Who would have ever considered the fact that we make life and death decisions at the grocery store, well, that is exactly what we are doing every time we shop.
The foods that provided my daily intake of protein were chicken breast, waffles, pita bread, hummus, macaroni and cheese, black eyed peas, sausage, cornbread, and cinnamon rolls. My daily intake of carbohydrates were found in waffles, syrup, pita bread, hummus, cran-cherry juice, macaroni and cheese, black eyed peas, corn bread, fruit juice, and cinnamon rolls. Almost every food that I ate contained lipids except for the syrup, water, fruit juice, cran-cherry juice.

As a result, there were no adjustments necessary. It was discovered that some of the proteins that I ate were complete proteins and some were incomplete proteins that had to be combined. The importance of this fact is, since proteins are part of every cell, tissue, and body fluid, they are considered building blocks. It takes 20 amino acids to make proteins. Complete proteins have all the necessary amino acids, while incomplete proteins take two or more combined. Based on the foods that I ate, my proteins, carbohydrates, and fat were all within the recommended range. My macronutrient intake was within the recommended range as well. These findings were encouraging because consistently consuming too much or too little of the wrong foods can result in poor nutrition. Even the natural foods you eat will be transformed into stomach filling waste that will increase sugar, fat, and salt

Health and nutrition, particularly my own, is something I have taken special interest in lately as I’ve come to realize I’m rapidly approaching the second half of my life and want it to be as good as, or even better than, the first half. If I were to be asked eight weeks ago if I was a healthy person, my answer would be a resounding, “Yes;” my regular physicals and blood work confirming my response. And while I still believe that to be true, what an eye opener the Diet Analysis project was, as far as understanding my actual nutritional intake in comparison to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of nutrients recommended for optimal health and well-being. The following paragraphs not only detail the Diet Analysis PLUS program used for this project,…

Growing up, I have always wanted to dedicate myself to doing something special in life. I was born in a village in Mexico where public health and education were very limited. I recall, one day, accompanying my mother to a ladies house where there was a sick child. My mother was one of the women in the village who would take care of the sick; she learned everything she knew from my grandmother. When we got there, I saw my mother prepare some medicine and giving it to the ill child.…

For my 3-day dietary analysis, I used an app on my iPhone called “Calorie King.” This app allows you to record daily food and water intake and amount of exercise. In analyzing the diet that I have from day to day, I learned that I do not have an adequate carbohydrate or calorie intake from my food. I believe these inadequacies in my calorie and carb intake is due to the fact that I have been on a low carb and high protein diet for a few months and I have fallen in to the habit of eating mainly animal protein and vegetables. While this has worked in helping me to lose weight, it seems that it does not provide the amount of nutrients, carbohydrates specifically, to meet the recommended daily amount.…

Throughout the years nutrition has become more than a simple definition of nourishment to me. It has affected my life in ways that I could never imagine, so making the decision to become a Registered Dietitian was elementary. They left everything they knew behind in search for a better life for themselves and their children. Instead, they found themselves living in the projects of South Yonkers with nothing but drugs, violence, and convenient stores surrounding them.…

Scientists have been able to estimate the amount of nutrients that the body requires. However, the amount of any particular nutrient varies from person to person, depending on your “age, sex, general health status, physical activity level, and use of medications and drugs” (Schiff 2013). It is also important to remember that consuming the required amount of nutrients that needs your dietary guidelines does not mean you will achieve an optimal nutritional status either. There are various references to determine one’s adequate caloric intake and the nutrients that one should be consuming, including looking at DRI’s(Dietary Reference Intakes) that nutritional excerpts have used to make dietary recommendations, EAR’s(Estimated Average Requirement),…

Workplace Skills Abilities of a registered dietitian should include extensive knowledge of nutrition as well as teaching skills to convey how to become a healthier person. A registered dietitian needs to stay up to date on nutrition to ensure that patients will receive the most beneficial care. The information obtained in school and through the internship required to become a registered dietitian plays a role in the knowledge shared to patients. As a dietitian gains experience, it is important to continue to study and learn because patients expect to “stay up-to-date on the latest nutrition information”(Neithercott, 2013). The human body’s chemistry with food and the daily recommended amount of calories are two of the many frequently asked…
