Matthew went over the syllabus for the semester. He gave us a short summary about “A hope in the Unseen” and the “Mindset” book, and then we discussed what it means to us. In addition to this, we were assigned to read both books by the following week. Since I had homework from other classes I waited until Sunday to start reading my assigned books. After reading both books, I began to realize and learn the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset. From then on I began to synchronize and connect those books to my daily life. Some of us said no she’s not and the rest of us said she is. At the end, we realized everyone was correct depending on whether she was lazy or wanted to let someone else feel that sense of leadership. On that day, we also discussed about our journal prompt; whether managers are born or made, and like always, everyone had a different opinion. On the other hand, I said managers are made because no one is programed to be a manager, it’s your decision. The other discussion of the “mindset of a champion” was interesting because most of us thought Coach Nelson’s lecture was not productive, but after discussing more we agreed that you don’t magically become better at basketball by closing your eyes and imagining shooting hundred shots in one minute. We realized that you need to actually go to a gym and physically practice shooting after your mental practice. Those presentations and journal prompts really helped because I began to apply those concepts in most of my classes. The reading of “A Hope in the Unseen” also motivated me to do better because Cedric is no different than I am. We both were raised by a single mother who wanted nothing but the best for us. Even though he had a growth mindset early on, and at times had a fixed mindset, I think we are still similar in that
