Esterification Of Benzoic Acid

Microwave (MW) assisted Esterification of Benzoic Acid (BA) offers the advantage of transformation of energy and heating throughout the volume efficiently in a shorter period and eliminates the use of excess solvent, during the course of reaction. The present study aims to assess the conversion and selectivity for the production of methyl benzoate compounds by esterification of benzoic acid using microwave irradiation. Effects of operating parameters such as reaction time, feed composition, microwave energy and reaction temperature were systematically investigated for the esterification of BA. Advantages like reduction in reaction time, minimization of waste acid production, and enhanced yield and selectivity for the desired products were important …show more content…
Fig:3% Selectivity of methyl benzoate (MB),Methyl oxobenzoate(MOB) and others with respect to time in minutes using Microwave Irradiation ,Reaction temperature :70 ᵒC,Feed ratio,BA:M:Hβ(Benzoic acid:Methanol:Zeolite Hβ)::1:3:1. Fig:4% Selectivity of methyl benzoate (MB) with respect to time and temperature using MW 300 watt, feed ratio,BA:M:Hβ(Benzoic acid:Methanol:Zeolite Hβ)::1:3:1.
With the use of solid acid catalyst (Hβ),same reaction is performed at temperture 70°C with the feed ratio Benzoic acid: Methanol: Hβ:: SA:M: β::1:3:1.
As the activity of zeolite enhances with temperature, so at 70°C, maximum conversion(83%) of BA and selectivity for MB(50%) are obtained. Again here with increase in temperature MB is produced with 64 % selectivity. In fig.4 effect of time shows that with Hβ 70 °C and with Hβ 80°C temperature gave the maximum selectivity to the desired product MB within the reaction time 15 min only.If the time of reaction increases, the selectivity remains constant.Increase in temperature decreases the selectivty of MB decreases as the boiling point of methanol is

In a typical example, 1 g c-PEO-OH was dissolved in 30 mL anhydrous N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent under dry argon atmosphere, to which 10 mL 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide was added at 0 °C dropwise for 30 min under vigorous stirring. The reaction mixture was then allowed to proceed at room temperature for 1 d. After that, the solution was concentrated by reduced pressure distillation to remove NMP solvent and excess 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide. The crude product was then washed with saturated aqueous solution of NaHCO3 and water sequentially for 3 times, dried over MgSO4, and precipitated in cold n-hexane to obtain a final brown viscous product. Preparation of c-PEO-N3 by substituting the Br on c-PEO-Br with azide functionalities…

Figure 8. shows the response of the carbon chain atoms triglycerides to an infrared radiance, which the fuel with the catalyst responds faster to the transmitted heat is around 31% T, and the fuel without the catalyst is around 40% T. These results indicated that the atom's bond in triglyceride chain is weakened, the viscosity decreases and the fuel readily absorb heat. Moreover, the highest temperatures achieved (see fig 3) and the shorter burnout time (see fig 6) prove that the fuel with the catalyst has a great…

To begin the first part of the experiment, zeolite and magnetized zeolite had to be synthesized. First, it was necessary to set up a contraption to hold a thermometer in place. This was done using a split cork and a 3 prong clam on a ring stand. 50 mL of 3.0 M NaOH was then added to a 250 mL beaker with a magnetic stir bar placed inside. After placing the solution on the stir bar, 3.7560 g of (sodium aluminate) was added to the solution.…

To begin the reaction,1ml of acetic acid was added to 0.1g p-dimethoxybenzene and 0.20ml of t-butyl alcohol in a test tube. The solution was mixed and placed in an ice bath. Approximately 34 drops of sulfuric acid from a plastic pipette dropper was slowly added to the solution. The solution remained under the ice bath during this addition to control heat production. The reaction produced no noticeable heat.…

The modifications allowed for the reaction to be greener. The reaction created less waste (principle 1), atom economy was executed from the atoms being used in their entirety (principle 7), the use of no solvent created a safer reaction conditions of no requirement to extract the product (principle 8), and finally energy efficiency because the reaction was done at room temperature (principle 9). A weighted amount of 0.44grams of solid maleic acid anhydride was placed into a beaker along with 0.5 ml (about 10 drops) of (E,E)-2,4-hexadien-1-ol. The mixture was stirred with a metal spatula for 10 minutes under the fume hood until the complete liquefaction and resolidification occurred of a white solid.…

In part two of this experiment the myristic acid is prepared from the trimyristin through hydrolysis. The experimenter’s objective in this part of the experiment is to synthesize myristic acid from the trimyristin in the first part of the experiment. In order to complete this, base promoted hydrolysis of an ester is used. The crude myristic acid is purified through recrystallization and then compared to the literature melting point. Sodium hydroxide is a strong base that can be added to fats or oils when heated.…

An alternative to using the phase transfer catalyst would be microwave irradiation. Simple CH-acidic compounds can be mono-alkylated in the solid-liquid phase in the absence of PTC, by applying microwave under solvent-free conditions. The experiment would involve exposing reactants to microwave irradiation in conjunction with the use of supported reagents which are of mineral origin, like mineral oxides (Fe(NO3), Cu(NO3)2). Microwave reaction involves selective absorption of microwave energy by polar molecules. The initial experiment with microwave energy would be using high dielectric solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide.…

Each intermediate product, including N-acetyl-p-toluidine, p-acetamidobenzoic acid, and p-aminobenzoic acid, was checked for yield, presence, and purity through weighing, taking IR and NMR spectrums, and determining the melting point. Thin Layer Chromatography was used to ensure the completion of the final reaction from p-aminobenzoic acid to benzocaine. The yield of the first step from p-toluidine to N-acetyl-p-toluidine was 91.9%. The yield of the second step from N-acetyl-p-toluidine to p-acetamidobenzoic acid was 49.85% The yield of the third step from p-acetamidobenzoic acid to p-aminobenzoic acid was 32.49%, which was not enough to continue so some product was borrowed…
