In the film John Q, we have two hard working class African American couple, who is John Q and his wife Denis who they have a son named Mikey. John Q, who is the father and husband, who is trying to his best to provide for his family and is barely make ends meet. Denise, who is John Q 's wife, is also working hard to help her husband. At the beginning of the film, there is a scene where their wife’s car is being repossession by a towing company because of lack of payment. The two later get into an argument because they are behind on payment on certain bills in the house. John Q reinsures his wife that he is trying his best and that he is looking for a second job to bring accumulate income for the household. Even though John Q and Denis are both financially struggling, they both try to keep a straight composure in front of their son Mike.
In the film Mikey, a real enthusiastic kid that plays baseball who also wants to be a professional body builder and also a funny kid. During one of their son’s game, Mikey had collapsed on the ground after

John Q and his wife went to many different government agencies to receive financial and medical assistance. Unfortunately, they were not qualified for any extra financial funding from the government. The couple did receive donations from their church members of their local church, but it was still not enough. John Q and his wife had ended up selling everything in their household including their car which was their only way of transportation. Even though, they have both tried every possible way to raise money for their son 's heart transplant they were still coming up short of the money. John Q had come to his last resort by holding everyone in the emergency as his hostages. The chaotic act that John Q did by holding everyone in the ER hostage had not only sparked the attention of the police, but it also brought in a huge amount of attention from the
