Intercultural Communication Reflection Paper

Intercultural communication always has something new to offer us. Regardless of the situation, no interaction is going to be exactly like another. Throughout the book Intercultural Competence: Interpersonal Communication Across Cultures, by Lustig and Koester, we have learned a lot of new concepts, imperatives, and principles that go along with being able to competently communicate with other cultures. Through the two international student days we were able to participate in, we got to apply these concepts and firsthand communicate with other students from cultures around the world. Through the interpersonal imperative and being able to engage in conversations with people from various backgrounds, I have learned how to apply interaction management in order to make sure everyone has an equal part in the conversation.
Reflection
To begin, our first international student day went great. I felt I really got to know the students on a personal level and grow knowledge and appreciation of their culture. Although there were 7 of us, only

We were all sending and receiving messages throughout the length of our conversation. “It emphasizes the construction or shared creations of messages and meanings” (Koester & Lustig, 2013, p.16). This model has two goals in mind. The first is not simply to influence and persuade others, but to really grow knowledge and seek an understanding in order to develop shared meanings and agreements (Koester & Lustig, 2013, p.16). The second is that no one person is just sending or receiving messages. You are hopefully doing both, therefore, there is no such thing as a pure sender or receiver (Koester & Lustig, 2013, p.16).     Diane, You are right about e-mails has become a popular method because if you cant see someone face to face you send them an email. Even though its popular it can also be misinterpertted depending on what you wrote in the email.
