Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has had different definitions in the ‘Scientific World’ and the world of those who embrace the act. According to the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO), Female Genital Mutilation is the act of removing the external parts of the female genitalia, partially or totally for non-medical reasons (WHO) whereas the practitioners see it as the cutting of “extra skin tags” of the female’s reproductive organ. Various reasons have been put forward to support it, ranging from social, cultural and religious reasons, mainly in the so called Islamic communities. FGM is a violation of the rights of the girl child, causes health implications and drastically disempowers the sexuality of women.

Therefore, violation of the rights of the child should be taken into consideration by those who uphold FGM.
If only the violation of child’s right was the disadvantage one could find a way out to allow the child to decide. A thorough studies by two renowned Doctors of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the DRK Hospital in Berlin, reveals that FGM causes health problems and critical consequences during pregnancy and child birth. Personally, I lived in a society where it is overwhelmingly practiced and I had seen most of these situations occur. So many children died at birth due to lack of enough vaginal opening to allow smooth passage. Renowned medical practitioners confirmed that the practice exposes women to higher risk of infections in the urine excretory system and injuries to the “perineum”. “The obstruction of the birth canal can lead to a prolonged delivery with the consequence of a higher infant mortality rate and damage of the brain due to lack of oxygen” (Kentenich et al.). On the other side of the argument are those who believe that FGM cleanses the woman. They believed that the female genitalia are dirty and distasteful to look at (Little 30-34).
