American life is quick paced and busy. Americans want quick reliable transportation, quick internet connection, quick money, quick healing, quick weight loss, quick energy, and even quick service from the restaurants they eat out at. In 1921, Billy Ingram and Walter Anderson found White Castle, and American company. The opening of White Castle is known to be one of the first hamburger chains in America. White Castle was known to sell hamburgers for five cents each. (Paul, 2004) Howard Johnson's first franchised the restaurant concept in the mid-1930s, formally standardizing menus, signage and advertising (Lukas, 2004). One of the most popular fast food restaurants to open in America was McDonald’s. The owner’s name was McDonald. McDonald and his brother Maurice thought of opening the first fast food restaurant called McDonald’s (Graham, 1991). The restaurant first started with hamburgers, cheeseburgers, French fries as a side and shakes for drinks. After just a few years, there had been twenty-one more franchises opened so that the restaurant served more people across the nation (Graham, 1991). Immigrants who poured into America brought new tastes and flavors with them. This change led to a whole new menu. Today, the most popular type of American fast food restaurant specializes in a meal that consists of a hamburger, French fries, and a fountain drink such as Pepsi or Dr. Pepper.
