Fast Food Boom
People today are busier than they have ever been; household adults have at least one job just to make ends meet. The overall dynamic of the house has changed immensely since the 1920’s when fast food was first introduced to the American society, and even though the United States is still in a down economy, one thing remains the same, fast food restaurants. Even though most people know that fast food contributes to health problems, it still remains a part of the American life. There are more options than ever before, and while the big name restaurants are slowing down and sometimes fading out, fast food restaurants keep their doors open and even open new ones. Fast food is affordable by using inexpensive labor. Someone can absolutely go to a grocery store, buy food, and prepare a meal for less money than what would be spent at a restaurant. However, there isn’t always time to prepare, cook and clean, which is where fast food is welcomed into the lives of the fast paced American lifestyle. Value meals and dollar menus have made it possible to feed a family of five for under $10. How can they make the food that cheap? According to Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation, The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, fast food restaurants have perfected ‘throughput’, which is a companies speed and volume of what they produce. “...It is about increasing the speed of assembly, about doing things faster in order to make more.” (68-69). They have introduced the production worker concept into their restaurant. Every employee has a specific function, one to grill, one to assemble, one to put together drinks and one to take the order, so they do not require any real skill from those that work for them. In basic terms, a worker just needs to know how to push a button. So low skill requirement means low labor charges, in fact most make minimum wage.
