Sadness, loneliness, and the dying wish to go home has been a part every old literature story told in the past. Though no one may ever find out who had originally told the stories or if it had been change from time to time, the translator of each individual story had a similar tone. The stories “The Seafarer”, “The Wanderer”, and “The Wife’s Lament” all conveyed the tone of melancholy in different ways.
To begin, “The Seafarer” conveys the tone of melancholy, a feeling of sadness with no obvious reason, which is portrayed by the sailor and the setting in the story. The way that the storyteller and translator had shown the sadness is in the way they set up the setting of the story. They wrote “How the sea swept …show more content…
In “The Wife’s Lament” begins with a woman saying all her words come for “deep sadness” which is resulted in the woman’s exile. It seems as though she has never experienced something like this hardship. She begins to feel helpless when her lord has left the family to go sail the seas and leave them behind. She begins to feel anxious as to where her lord is and sets off on a journey to find him; however, the kingsmen of the lord do not want her to reunite with the lord. Their separation left her heartbroken, mourning for her beloved husband. She later found out that that beloved man she once knew was actually plotting something behind her back, that man she once had feelings for she could no longer say she loved and from there the friendship was terminated. She then moved to a more gloomy place to forget all about that dreadful man she used to love. “The valleys are dark the hills high the yard overgrown, bitter with briars a joyless dwelling. The sadness portrayed in each story which is told in a different way. The sadness of a lonesome sailor, the sorrow of the lost soul, man, in search of a new lord, and the heartbroken wife with a once a inconsiderate, merciless, cruel, and inhuman lord. Though they are sad they all are learning to find something better to call home and to rely on when there is nothing greater to treasure in the world. Each tale will forever show the empowerment of sadness and the changes that can follow after the cruelness of the time
