Technology has had the largest impact on our society and culture in the past few decades. Before cellular communication, life was very simplistic in which pen and paper were used to form letters to send information to those who were not close by before the rise of technology. As the Internet and mobile phones were created, there was a rapid increase in the production and distribution of cellular devices as their popularity steadily increased. The introduction of the flip phone was a giant stepping-stone for communication until multiple companies and mobile networks began to expand and innovate. Apple was the first company that revolutionized the telecommunications industry with this first iteration of the iPhone. Smartphone communication took …show more content…
At this point in our society it seems that if an individual does not have a smartphone, they are considered abnormal or different from others just because of the device they have. This being said, cellular communication and smartphone use has dramatically increased over the years. “Aided by the convenience and constant access provided by mobile devices, especially smartphones, 92% of teens report going online daily — including 24% who say they go online almost constantly, according to a new study from Pew Research Center” (Lenhart). Clearly stated by this data, teenagers are succumbed by and addicted to their mobile device as they constantly feel the urge or desire to go online. The effect that social media has on teenagers is what truly makes them the focal point of this controversy. “71 percent of teens use more than one social media network site” (Lenhart) on their mobile device. There are many facts and elements that prove that cellular devices are extremely harmful to the human body. Researchers are continuing to prove it to the public to raise awareness to people all over the globe. Smartphones are proven to emit radiation that can have numerous detrimental effects on our health. “The radiation breaks DNA strands, disrupts cell functioning, weakens the brain’s protective barrier, and releases highly reactive and damaging free radicals” (Markov). Markov installs fear and brings awareness to the audience through this well written statement with a structure that implies the many negative affects to cellular radiation and how it harms our brains and mental processes. Although an individual may not be aware of these effects, over extended periods of time one can encounter sleep disorders, headaches, anxiety, and depression from the radiation in addition to all of the addictive qualities of a cellular device. Not only can cellular radiation affect an individual in a negative way but the device itself can have an effect on those around you as well. Radiation can not only be emitted to the person carrying the phone but also is spread around to others.
